| Mililtary Leaders Support DoD STARBASE |
|
"The DoD STARBASE Program is truly a worthwhile endeavor. Through outreach and integrated educational programs, STARBASE is increasing interest in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) among our nation's youth.
"As we look to the future and the demands placed on our future forces, science and technology will provide the portals through which the Department pours capability into any world event. If we do not have a professional force, educated by quality programs in math, science, and engineering, we will not be up to the challenge of tomorrow. " My wife and I were eager to expand the support local military installations could provide to schools around our bases. We felt that DoD STARBASE was a perfect way to engage with school leadership and include our military members to increase awareness of the importance of science, math, and engineering sciences for young people at an early enough point in their education that we might spark a long-term desire to pursue these skills for life."
Rear Admiral J.F. Kilkenny, Commander, Naval Education and Training Command "As the head of Naval Education and Training, I am pleased to play a significant role in the Department of Defense's STARBASE program. This important program provides incredible benefits toward the development of students and teachers, while addressing the critical national need to increase educational support for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) for the neediest children within our communities." DoD STARBASE is full of exciting, challenging and fun programs that support the early stages of educational development in the areas of STEM. As a community outreach program, DoD STARBASE engages students at the fifth grade level and builds foundational skills that will benefit students throughout their educational years. Students learn through interactive instructional computer modules, lessons, games, activities and science experiments. They develop the foundational skills for engineering through hands-on learning and activities designed to cultivate their creativity and problem-solving skills, all integrated into the science, math and technology learning experiences."
Major General Tod M. Bunting, Adjutant General of Kansas and Chairman, National Guard Association of the United States "DoD STARBASE is a true treasure for America's youth. I have been involved in the DoD STARBASE program since the very beginning in 1992. At that time, with local funding, Kansas demonstrated very effectively that the initial Michigan STARS program was portable. At the time, I was a lieutenant colonel with the Kansas National Guard's 184th Fighter Wing. A small team of full-time and traditional Guard members organized the first DoD STARBASE Academy in Kansas at McConnell Air Force Base. When the idea was first presented to me, I knew immediately this program would be a great opportunity to make a difference with students in the areas of science, technology, engineering and math. When you read many of the statistics and trends in this country regarding students pursuing careers in engineering, science and mathematics, it is very troubling. The DoD STARBASE program can and has changed that perception for many students. We have heard countless stories of students in Kansas who have attended a DoD STARBASE academy and now are attending college to pursue a career in the field of science, technology, engineering or math. It sure doesn't take a "rocket scientist" to know that the DoD STARBASE program does make a difference."
"DoD STARBASE is a place where young children can learn, pursue their dreams, and make them come true. DoD STARBASE gets kids excited about space, about discovery, and endless possibilities. They get to "see" and "do," experiencing first-hand the wonders of learning. It gets them interested in science, technology, math and engineering -- the doorway to discovery! Growing up in Los Angeles, I never thought one day I would fly jets for the Air Force, or command the Space Shuttle as an astronaut with NASA. And yet all this was made possible by remarkable people -- parents, teachers, friends and mentors -- who guided and t aught me just like the DoD STARBASE Program does with America's youth. As a parent and former astronaut, the program has special meaning to me because of its educational focus and opportunities for learning. It benefits everyone involved, not just the children. I've spoken with many teachers and volunteers withe DoD STARBASE. They talk about how DoD STARBASE provided them the opportunity to give back to their community, and often times renewed their enthusiasm about their chose profession and desire to learn. What a tremendous gift! "
"We are exceptionally proud of our Michigan DoD STARBASE Program. It provides great opportunities for our young people. The synergy between Selfridge ANGB and our DoD STARBASE opens young peoples' minds to the military -- its past, present, and future. Our DoD STARBASE program is great for the community and military. We are teaching people that would not otherwise be exposed to the military and displaying a positive image. I have received very positive feedback from out community members throughout the entire metropolitan area. I have personally escorted the Governor on a tour of our DoD STARBASE and she was thoroughly impressed." |
